I promised Bethany, in the comment box of our first Rumors of Water chapter, that I would share this “test the waters” post I originally wrote in 2010. (The post was designed to help me decide if I should pursue the idea of writing Rumors.)

As I commented to Bethany, Jane Friedman, who was the publisher at Writer’s Digest at the time, left the following comment on my “test the waters” post. Of course, it encouraged me to write the book! …

10 Reasons to Write (or Not) a Book About Writing

I woke up thinking about reasons to write a book about writing. The slant of light behind lemon curtains and room-darkening shades told me to go back to sleep. It was too early to think about such things.

By 6 a.m., my thoughts were so loud I had to leave my warm, ivory cotton sheets to make a list of reasons (to do or not to do). The list is not a promise, it is a question.
